The most beautiful cave in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest, Cave of the Mounds, three west of Mount Horeb, lies just off U.S. Highways 18/151 in Blue Mounds, WI.
The United States Department of the Interior and the National Park Service designated Cave of the Mounds a National Natural Landmark because the site possesses "exceptional value as an illustration of the nation’s natural heritage and contributes to a better understanding of man’s environment". Curious tourists and budding cave enthusiasts have been enjoying an introduction to caving in the midwest for years while visiting Cave of the Mounds.
Nestled in a beautiful valley hidden in the foothills of Blue Mounds, WI. just three miles west of Mount Horeb. Little Norway has another more romantic name, the name chosen by its founder, Isak Dahle, which suggests more vividly the sense of magic that pervades this lovely valley: Nissedahle, or valley of the Elves.
The buildings are authentic Norse architecture, simple and durable. One has a growing sod roof; another, the spring house, is peaked by three cupolas and most of them are trimmed with warm, fresh blue that is typically Norwegian.
Because the landscape of southwest Wisconsin is much like that of Norway it was in this sheltered valley under the hill that, in the mid 1800's, Osten Olson Haugen from Telemark Norway settled with his family and called it home.

The Uplands refers to a section of South Central Wisconsin that the glaciers of many years ago left untouched. This means that this region, also known as the Driftless Area, was left with many hills, valleys and unspoiled natural beauty. The rolling hills and hidden valleys attracted immigrants to the region and small ethnic communities sprang up that still flourish today.
The Uplands offers the visitor great restaurants, charming shops, comfortable lodging, fascinating museums and more in a restful rural atmosphere. We are one hour or less from Madison, Dubuque or Wisconsin Dells; two hours away from Milwaukee, Rockford and Galena, and three hours from Chicago. Come visit us soon - you will be glad you did!
